“AN ELDER’S QUALIFICATIONS”

SCRIPTURE: 1 Timothy 3:1-10; Titus 1:5-9

INTRODUCTION:

We are considering the equipping ministry of the elders in Christ’s church.

To fulfill the responsibility we must be careful to select those who are qualified.

THOSE WHO ARE SPIRITUALLY MATURE

Experience in God’s Kingdom

A blameless character

Good domestic relations

A good reputation

THOSE WHO ARE UNIQUELY FIT

Desire for the office

A man

Married with a well managed household

CONCLUSION:

We are called upon to make a wise decision.

Begin your journey to spiritual maturity today.

from a minister’s desk . . .

Because we will soon be selecting leaders from among the members of our congregation we are considering the responsibilities and qualifications of both elders and deacons.

This past Sunday we looked at the responsibility of an elder as illustrated in Acts 20. This week we will think about their qualifications as we review Paul’s instructions to Timothy and Titus.

As you prepare for our gathering read 1 Timothy 3:1-10 and Titus 1:5-9 and seek the answers to these questions:

1.   Why can an overseer/elder not be a new convert?

2.   Does being blameless (KJV) or above reproach (NIV) mean a person must be perfect to be considered spiritually mature? If not, why not?

3.   Can you pick out some characteristics of spiritual maturity as Paul thinks of it? List them and reflect upon them.

4.   What special qualifications must a spiritually mature person have to be qualified as an elder? Why do you think these are necessary?

If the Lord doesn’t come first I’ll see you Sunday,

Richard
