From a minister’s desk …

Over 100 years ago The Christian Standard published a series of autobiographical sketches by a number of “Eminent Ministers of the Christian Church” relating their religious experiences in coming to Christ. One of those ministers wrote the lead article that became the title of a compilation of those articles into a book, also published by Standard, entitled From Darkness to Light.

In that article Brother B. B. Sanders related his pilgrimage from the son of a prominent Baptist minister to a believer who was committed to being a Christian only.

This Sunday I want to share with you a bit of his story, which is illustrative of the stories many men and women over the past 150 years have told; stories of coming into the freedom of Christ, often escaping the bonds of sectarian teaching that held them back.

Today many, if not most people, even church people, dismiss the authoritative teaching of the Scripture as being necessary or even important in one’s salvation. The mindset is, “Whatever a person believes is alright as long as they are sincere. It really doesn’t make any difference what church or religion one belongs to, for we’re all going to the same place.”

If you believe that, or know someone that believes it, I challenge you to invite them to meet with us around the Lord’s table this coming Sunday, to hear the message that convinced Brother Sanders and thousands of others to cast aside man made names, creeds, and teachings for the freedom found in Christ.

That simple sermon is entitled,

                                                        “THE GOSPEL OF CHRIST”

SCRIPTURE: Romans 1:16; 1 Corinthians 15:1-8; Acts 2:8

INTRODUCTION:

The gospel alone is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes.

This gospel is composed of facts, commands and promises.

THREE FACTS TO BE BELIEVED

THREE COMMANDS TO BE OBEYED

THREE PROMISES TO BE ENJOYED

CONCLUSION:

It has not been that long ago that men took the authoritative teaching of Christ and the apostles seriously.

Before it is too late, accept the challenge to take it seriously too.
